Ska is a genre of music that originated in Jamaica during the late 1950s, characterized by upbeat rhythms, offbeat guitar or piano accents, walking basslines, and prominent brass instrumentation. Typically performed at moderate to fast tempos, it combines elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American rhythm and blues and jazz.
